A Credit Union Built To Serve The Community

Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) like 1st Financial Federal Credit Union, are mission-driven financial institutions  dedicated to providing financial services to meet the needs of economically disadvantaged individuals within under-served communities.  CDFIs are certified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund. In order to become a certified CDFI, the financial institution must: have a primary mission of promoting community development; provide financial products and services; serve one or more defined low income target markets; maintain accountability to the community it serves; and be a legal non-governmental entity.

Some of the factors that 1st Financial responds to as a CDFI in St. Louis are as follows:

  • The median family income (MFI) in our immediate service area is 71% of the MFI benchmark for our region.
  • An estimated 15% of the people in our service area live below the poverty level.
  • 50% of our locations are in census tracts that qualify as CDFI Investment Areas.
  • 25% of our credit union locations are in counties that have recorded poverty rates above 20% in each of the past three decades.

One out of every three credit unions in the United States are highly concentrated in under-served areas, but that does not make them CDFIs. Community development credit unions are defined by what they do, not just where they live. Recent research has shown that CDFI credit unions are significantly more likely than their peers to provide an array of products and services that respond to the specific needs of low-income and under-served communities.

1st Financial responds to the needs of our community through access to products such as no credit score checking accounts, low or no score auto loans, free online and mobile access, share-secured credit cards, and credit building loans.  1st Financial also partners with local government programs, giving financial services and literacy access to thousands of under-served youth through the College Kids Program and the STL Youth Jobs programs every year.

1st Financial is a member of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions and works diligently to collaborate with other local CDFI financial service providers around St. Louis in order to maximize the greatest service to the community.
