1st Financial Federal Credit Union Helps St. Louis Children by Serving the Little Bit Foundation

March 30th, 2015- 1st Financial Federal Credit Union Continued its Helping People 1st Grant program in February by partnering with The Little Bit Foundation to support disadvantaged children in the St. Louis area.

As part of the vision of “helping our members achieve their financial dreams”, 1st Financial created the Helping People 1st Grant to support organizations who are working to help members of the community achieve personal or financial growth in the areas of housing, financial literacy, job training, or education.

The Little Bit Foundation (Little Bit) was founded in 2001 and has grown into an organization serving 5,000 elementary and middle school students in 17 St. Louis area schools. Ninety to 100 percent of the students in Little Bit schools are at or near the poverty level.

Little Bit is committed to helping disadvantaged school children by creating a positive impact for personal growth, increasing self-esteem and encouraging a more focused and active learning environment. Little Bit volunteers do this by building strong relationships and partnering closely with St. Louis schools.

The Downtown branch promoted Little Bits in February by holding multiple baked sales and basket raffles.  On February 19th, 1st Financial employees spent a day volunteering on site unpacking and folding clothing donations.  On March 6th, Downtown branch employees presented a check totaling $1750.25.

“This February, the great team from 1st Financial was able to unpack an entire skid of uniform shirts in record time,” said Lucy England, Volunteer Manager for The Little Bit Foundation. “They worked together to ensure that over 1,000 uniform shirts were taken out of their packaging and put on the pick lines for the volunteers to use when filling orders.”

She continued, saying- “Because of their hard work, 500 children will have their uniform shirts ready to go for spring! We really appreciate everything 1st Financial has done for us and we cannot wait to continue to grow this relationship!”

1st Financial Federal Credit Union Celebrates First Year of New Community Development Program

January 13, 2015– 1st Financial Federal Credit Union, located in Wentzville, St. Charles, Hazelwood, and downtown St. Louis, MO announce the results of the Helping People 1st Grant program in 2014.

1st Financial Federal Credit Union started the Helping People 1st Grant program to make a positive impact in the St. Louis area.  As part of 1st Financial’s vision of “helping our members achieve their financial dreams,” this program was created to support nonprofit organizations that provide community assistance with an emphasis in Education, Housing, Financial Literacy, or Job Training.

“The commitment our employees show to work for their communities touches my heart, said Carol Minges, Chief Executive Officer of 1st Financial Federal Credit Union.  “We have a team of people that volunteer not because they have to serve.  They volunteer because they have a calling to serve.   Seeing their dedication to selflessly help others is another reminder for me about why it is so great to work for a credit union.”

Beginning in February, branch employees picked a new 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization to serve each month.  The employees were encouraged to schedule paid volunteer time during work hours and held fundraising activities to support the charity.  At the end of the month, the nonprofit received a $500 contribution from 1st Financial as well as any additional donations earned from fundraising within the branches.

“Our focus is always on strengthening our community, says Tracy Verner, Brand Ambassador for 1st Financial Federal Credit Union.  “We purposefully sought out 501(c) 3 charities who demonstrated the ability to affect real change in each of the four communities we serve.  These personal collaborative experiences gave our employees insight and motivated them to do more- volunteering more, hold more fundraising events, and creating more awareness for these wonderful causes!”

She continued, stating that “Time and time again we made lasting connections with organizations whose core values are very close to our own and impacted the communities we serve! I look forward to working with many of these allies again in 2015 and the years to come!”

In 2014, 1st Financial employees worked over 462 hours of paid volunteer time scrubbing out storerooms, sorting canned goods, cleaning up gardens, and building part of a house.  Over the course of the year this program presented $15,624.65 to charitable organizations within the St. Louis area.  Those organizations included:

  • Gateway 180: Homelessness Reversed (Housing) (Education)
  • O.A.S.I.S. Food Pantry (Job Training)
  • PAKT Community Center (Education)
  • Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County (Housing)

  • KidSmart (Education) (Housing)
  • Connections to Success (Job Training) (Financial Literacy)
  • Youth In Need (Job Training)
  • Junior Achievement (Financial Literacy)
  • St. Louis Crisis Nursery (Education)

The Helping People 1st Grant program has had a long-term effect on the organizations that were served in 2014: “Some organizations talk about making a difference, but 1st Financial makes a difference,” said Toni Burrow, President of PAKT Community Center. “It is hard for me to put into words what I am feeling in my heart about what 1st Financial did for the PAKT organization this past year. The 1st Financial employees who served in the pantry were needed and much appreciated.”

She continued saying, “Over three hundred individuals were served because of 1st Financial’s efforts.  I am especially grateful for the collaborative partnership 1st Financial and PAKT has formed to help “Fill the Need” of those we serve who are in crisis in the Ferguson and the North St. Louis County communities.”

1st Financial Federal Credit Union Partners with a Local Non-Profit to Support Low Income Students in St. Louis

November 25th, 2014- 1st Financial Federal Credit Union Continued its Helping People 1st Grant program in October by partnering with The Little Bit Foundation to support education in the St. Louis area.

As part of the vision of “helping our members achieve their financial dreams”, 1st Financial created the Helping People 1st Grant to support organizations who are working to help members of the community achieve personal or financial growth in the areas of housing, financial literacy, job training, or education.  In October, the Downtown branch on Washington Avenue chose to sponsor The Little Bit Foundation.

“The work they do is amazing,” said Karen Neel, Branch Manager for 1st Financial Federal Credit Union.  “We chose to work with The Little Bit Foundation because they work with schools to provide everything from personal hygiene items, to clothing and uniforms, to shoes, to coats, school supplies and recently a book fair where every child gets 2 books to take home.”

She continued, saying, “Another wonderful thing about their organization is that they stay at the schools instead of just dropping items off.  Each school has a “store” where the kids can get what they need or order it and Little Bits finds it for them.  They also work with affiliates that come out and do health screenings and eye exams on site, often letting the kids walk out with their prescription in the same visit.”

The 1st Financial Federal Credit Union Washington Avenue office employees promoted Little Bit to members inside the lobby, held a month long bake sale, and raffled off holiday themed baskets.  In addition to the fundraising efforts within the branch, 1st Financial added $500 to the overall contribution as a part of the Helping People 1st GrantOn November 10th, 1st Financial employees presented a check totaling $1,291.04.

“This gift has come at an ideal time, as we prepare students for the cold months ahead, with warm new coats and winter wear,” said Rosemary Hanley, Executive Director of The Little Bit Foundation. “Only through the generous support of community leaders, such as 1st Financial Federal Credit Union, can we continue to fulfill our vision of breaking down barriers to a child’s education, and we are very grateful.”photo

Headquartered in St Charles, Connections to Success is a nonprofit agency working to break the cycle of poverty through hope, resources, and a plan.  Connections to Success, and its programs Sweet Success and Dress for Success, provide educational programs, job placement, and mentoring to men and women in the St. Louis area.

Additionally, senior management and some of the Wentzville branch staff attended a mock interview session at Dress for Success Friday, September 19th.  The managers sat down with interviewees and provided them with sample questions and job hunting suggestions.  At the end of the session, the managers took part in the participants’ graduation ceremony from the program.

Credit unions were founded by groups of people who combined their resources and expertise to the benefit of the entire population.  The Helping People 1st Grant gives 1st Financial members and employees the opportunity to directly support the development of the St. Louis area.  Each month, one of the four branches work with a non-profit organization focused on serving the community through housing, financial literacy, job training, or education efforts.

The Wentzville branch employees promoted Connections to Success inside the lobby and spent a day volunteering on site during business hours.  At the end of September, Connections to Success received the $500 grant plus any additional funds the branch was able to raise.  On October 6th, Wentzville employees presented a check totaling $1601.25.

“1st Financial was an awesome team to work with,” said Alesha Barber, Regional Boutique Coordinator at Connections to Success.  “Between the volunteering, the bake sale, the mentoring day, and their donations, 1st Financial employees went above and beyond for Connections to Success.  Thank you.”
